Preparing for a Long Distance Cycling Adventure

May 21, 2019, Author: Beyond Boundaries Travel

Long distance cycling is a rewarding challenge that few would undertake. This adventure takes months to prepare for and requires mental fortitude because of the hours a cyclist would be on the road. The whole trip will take its toll on your mind and body. However, once you achieve your goal, you will feel a sense of accomplishment like no other.

Instructors and experts from cycling training camps cite the following ways you can prepare for an ultra long distance ride.

Find Inspiration

You do not need to re-invent the wheel, as there have been several men and women across age groups who have travelled thousands of kilometres all over the world. These cyclists may have posted their feats online or traditional media. Read their accomplishments, such as the routes they took, their pacing at each leg of their adventure, the equipment they used, where they rested, how long they cycled each day, and all the other details that made their trip successful.

Accumulate Hours and Distance

The ideal time to prepare for long distance cycling is months before your planned trip. This allows you to train properly and accumulate the hours and distance you need for a successful run. Gradually increase the number of hours you spend on a bike. Start with around three hours, then add increments of 30 minutes or an extra hour each week. This enables you to gain strength and stamina for the gruelling activity you will undertake.

Time Instead of Distance

A lot of factors will affect your cycling adventure, some of which include the terrain, wind, temperature, and weather. One thing you can control before going is the time you spend riding. Train for the hours spent cycling instead of distance.

Build Intensity

As you get further into your training program, start working on intensity and strength. You will need these to power up hills and steep ascents along the route. Mix the routine with recovery and bursts of speed. Go up and down a hill to prepare your body for the long distance trip.

Create a Nutrition Plan and Implement it Before the Trip

The physical aspect of training is not the only thing you should prepare for. Nutrition is an important part of your program because you will be on the road for an extended period.

Identify the amount of carbohydrates, proteins, and other minerals and vitamins you need to consume. Also, learn how much water you need to consume to stay hydrated. The food you eat will serve as fuel and strength as you make your way through various countries. Fatigue and muscle weakness may set in sooner than you think if you fail to eat correctly.

The Right Bicycle

You will need a sturdy and reliable bicycle that is easy to fix while on the road. Many experienced cyclists opt for a weldable steel frame bike. Bring spare parts and some tools that may come in handy during your long cycling tour.

These are some of the preparations one must make for a successful long distance ride. It is important to get ready before the trip to reduce the possibility of injuries and fatigue while on the road.
